Mobile phone ownership and internet access: what is the difference?

Why the 68.65 percent mobile phone indicator is not the same as 72.78 percent internet access.

Short answer

Owning or controlling a mobile phone and using the internet are different behaviours. Someone can use the internet without owning a phone, or own a phone without using the internet during the survey period.

What the measure covers

Do not add the percentages because their populations can overlap.

BPS digital statistics use Susenas with a defined reference population and recall period. Different indicators can use different denominators.

How to compare it

Check whether the base is people, internet users, or households. Percentages with different denominators cannot be added or directly compared.

Limits on conclusions

Aggregate data does not identify users, device brands, operators, or the audience size of private platforms.
